My BOOK LIST - PUBLISHED WORKS
::::::::::::::::::::::

The various spiritual classics of
Fr. Marin de Boylesve, S.J. (1813-1892)

How this project started: I recently discovered one of the few books by this French priest that was translated into English:  "Little Month of Saint Joseph" and found such unique spiritual insights so simply expressed in this devotional booklet I had to publish it.

Looking into his life, he was an amazing priest, one true Traditional Jesuit, the kind that gave fiery sermons and cared about the salvation of souls and the glory of God.  He is still known in French circles for helping to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart and thereby supported the construction of the Sacre Coeur basilica in Paris.

I also found out he was from the Vendeé, that blessed region of France that resisted the Masonic French Revolutionaries.  The people of Brittany and the Vendeé areas supported the Catholic King and gave their lives for the Faith despite the horrific persecution from the Revolutionary soldiers.  The Vendeans suffered in brutal, genocidal ways, arguably, the likes of which would not be seen in Europe until Hitler and his concentration camps.

Patriotic to the core, this courageous Catholic zeal of the Vendeé and the spirit of St. Ignatius is ever present in Fr. de Boylesve's books.  Someone told me you would never know they were written in the 19th century, they sound as if they were written for our dark times today when we need such spiritual encouragement, and it is true.  I had to see if there were other books, and yes, quite a few that were never translated into English, which is now my latest project!

Brushstrokes of a Gadfly

    Creative and impetuous, Katherine Walsingham has simple but grand plans after she receives her Masters degree in art--to defiantly strive for the highest ideals in her work contrary to modernist trends, and, like many artists, to open her own gallery, right in the heart of fashionable Manhattan, never suspecting the successes and triumphs, bumps and trials that will head her way.  Consumed with her career goals and not prepared to settle down just yet, she discovers life and love have a strange way of turning all her best laid plans topsy-turvy with bittersweet consequences, especially when she has caught the eye of New York's most eligible bachelor whose family has a dark and disturbing past.

Handel's Path to Covent Garden

(Batalha Publishers, August 2010)

         Many Classical music lovers are familiar with the composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) for his famous “Messiah” oratorio, but are not aware his preferred area of composition was Italian opera seria.   Biographical books explore his career as an opera composer and the rise of the new pious genre when Italian opera was no longer popular in London, but rarely do we find detailed accounts or discussions of that strange period in the 1730s when this shift in popularity forced Handel to leave the Haymarket theatre and join with John Rich at Covent Garden where he tried to carry on the Royal Academy opera company in competition with the new Opera of the Nobility venture founded by the Prince of Wales before he was finally forced to abandon opera in favour of the oratorio. This book explores this rocky transition period and how it affected Handel’s work, namely, his addition of French elements into his operas and other novel innovations in order to regain his chagrined public. There are discussions exploring the possibility Handel was his own worse enemy with regards to his business decisions as impresario-composer, alienating the Italians of London and his public, which nearly cost him his career.  A fascinating study for Handel admirers.
